Embedding employability into teaching: The Sociology experience

Thursday 2 November 2017, 12.30pm to 2.00pm

Speakers: Ruth Penfold Mounce, Daryl Martin, Rosie Smith, Clare Jackson, Vicky Barton and Katy Mann Benn
Location: Room W/N/307

One of the first questions that parents and prospective students raise on Open Days to the Sociology Department is ‘so what jobs can you do with a BA Sociology’? As part of the Sociology Department approach to implementing the York Pedagogy a particular effort has been made to embed employability into our teaching. This workshop draws on an investigation into the skills undergraduate students feel they are developing during their studies and how to make it explicit to them what they are acquiring. Finally, the transferable mechanisms used to further embed employability is explored through the Dissertation module and the introduction of the ‘Sociology Hour’.
