Forum workshop series 2016/17

Forum is a staff led, staff run organisation which aims to bring together and support colleagues involved in learning and teaching across the university. We run a series of lunchtime workshops each term on a variety of themes, and we encourage you to come along to contribute to the discussion and find out more about the pedagogy and practice of the other university departments.

The workshops are designed and run by colleagues and delivered in a variety of ways. Formats include a speaker providing background on a learning and teaching topic and sharing their experience, and interactive sessions providing opportunities to explore using new technology and resources. There is innovative learning and teaching practice taking place every day at the University and Forum workshops are an opportunity for you to find out about them and experiment.

Forum are mindful of university developments and changes around learning and teaching and we want to assist colleagues as much as we can. If you have ideas for spring or summer workshop sessions to assist in the development of these strands please do get in touch.

Team-Based Learning in Chemistry by Glenn Hurst – watch video 

Abstract submission and registration now open for ViCEPHEC2017 in York

According to a recent survey, 95% of employers wanted teamwork formally taught and assessed during an undergraduate chemistry degree; and 99% said that these generic skills were at least as important as a candidate’s understanding of the subject matter [1]. This session will provide participants an overview of the educational literature pertaining to team-based learning together with outlining how the Department of Chemistry facilitates large and small group group learning in the classroom, laboratory and independently. Examples to be discussed include:
  • Group exercises with industrial participation to enhance student personal development skills
  • Utilising scratchcards to facilitate competitive team-based support teaching
  • Collaborative summer business activity for students studying natural sciences (also adapted for postgraduate and CPD training)
  • Developing communication skills through microteaching via the Graduate Teaching Assistant programme
  • Laboratory courses and experiments for developing teamwork skills
  • Participants will also have the opportunity to share best practices in their respective departments.
